Des milliers de petits exploitants de l’État du Rio Grande do Norte (région aride et pauvre du nord-est du Brésil) sont en effet touchés depuis quelques semaines par la pire sécheresse des trente dernières années. Nombre d’entre eux ont perdu la totalité de leur récolte de coton et de maïs.
Plus de 1100 communes sont en situation d’urgence et on estime à 4 millions le nombre de personnes touchées.
Alors que la région est régulièrement frappée par la sécheresse, la plupart des petites propriétés rurales – souvent détenues par d’anciens paysans sans terre ayant obtenu une parcelle dans le cadre de la réforme agraire – ne sont pas dotées de systèmes d’irrigation, faute de moyens financiers .
Néanmoins, en vue de leur venir en aide, le ministère de l’intégration nationale a annoncé le déblocage d’une aide d’urgence d’un million d’euros, destinée à financer des camions-citernes, l’installation de 30000 citernes et la réparation de 2400 puits.
