Patrick tours Danvers blast; hazmat securing site for investigators
By John R. Ellement, Globe Staff, and Andrew Ryan, Globe Correspondent
Governor-elect Deval Patrick toured the wreckage today of a massive chemical explosion in Danvers as hazmat crews worked to secure the blast site safe so investigators could begin sorting through rubble.
« The plant itself is gone, » Patrick told reporters in a press conference. « There are steel girders that were melted because of the intensity of the fire. Now comes the hard work of shifting through ash for clues, for ignition sources, for an indication of what caused the fire. »
The explosion at CAI Inc at about 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday reverberated as far away and New Hampshire and displaced hundreds after it damaged some 70 homes.
State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said that hazmat crews are working today to « prepare the fire scene from a safety and health standpoint to allow the investigative teams enter to the site so they can commence their work. »
The family-owned CAI produces solvent- and water-based inks. The site was also home to Arnel Co., a paint producer.
Danvers Fire Chief James Tutko said today that the blast damaged roughly 70 homes, including 10 that will likely have to be torn down. An additional 12 homes sustained severe to moderate damage that would take some time to repair. Tutko said he hoped residents in the remaining 50 or structures may be able to return to their dwellings in the next few days.
The blast zone, a peninsula that juts into the confluence of Crane and Waters rivers, remains blocked off. Police barricades are set up on Endicott, Water and South Liberty streets. As a precaution, officials have kept electricity, gas and oil shut off to the homes there.
Residents are being directed to Danvers Town Hall to speak with representatives from FEMA or the Federal Emergency Management Agency. People whose homes have been deemed safe for entry are being given a police escort into the area so they can gather some belongings.
Investigators are collecting data to determine if the area could be declared a federal disaster zone, which would qualify residents for certain types of aid. Outgoing Governor Mitt Romney plans to review the data on Monday with the state

  2. Police Chief Neal Ouellette said the recovery from the blast would force the continued closure of Route 35, also known as Water Street, between Endicott and South Liberty streets until at least Monday.
« It’s going to be a very high traffic day with all the store sales, » Ouellette said, noting that Route 35 normally is a heavily traveled connection between Salem, Danvers and nearby shopping malls.
Mike Nalipinski, on-scene coordinator for the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said air quality tests of the area revealed no cause for concern. He said his chief worry at the blast site was chemical runoff from the plant into the waters around the Liberty Marina, and environmental workers ****placed booms just off the land’s edge to try to contain any solvents that may have leached into the water.*****
    ****
« The jury’s still out, » Nalipinski said about potential harm to the water. ****He said more tests would be run.****
Farrell said a large number of 55-gallon drums of paints and inks at the plants would be encased in safety containers and moved off the site. He said the bulk of the chemicals at the site were contained in underground tanks that did not appear to be damaged. Farrell said the capacity of the tanks is roughly 6,000 gallons, but he could not say how full they were.

  3. Cause of Boston area explosion comes under investigation
    By Glen Johnson
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
DANVERS, Mass. – It could take weeks to determine what caused a pair of explosions that ripped through a commercial and residential neighborhood here, knocking homes off their foundations, waking people sleeping miles away and sending residents fleeing.
Nearly 90 homes were damaged early Wednesday — about 25 are beyond repair — in the explosions, which were heard more than 20 miles away. Though 300 people were believed to have been home at the time, only 10 suffered injuries, all of them minor.
« The site is like an urban bomb, that has just completely devastated and destroyed not just the building in it, but the homes all around it, » Sen. John Kerry said after touring the site late Wednesday. « I really think as tragic, obviously, as this is, particularly hurtful and difficult on the eve of Thanksgiving, there’s a lot to be grateful for. »
State and local officials said late Wednesday that it would be at least Friday before residents in the most-damaged areas would be allowed to return home. Those staying in homes with less damage were given carbon monoxide detectors after inspectors found cracked or broken chimneys.
Federal and state emergency workers and the Red Cross were scheduled to staff an assessment center Friday and Saturday to help displaced residents.
The explosions occurred about 2:50 a.m. at CAI Inc., a manufacturer of solvents and inks. It sparked a 10-alarm fire that attracted a response from 30 cities and towns surrounding this town about 20 miles northeast of Boston.
The chemical plant, which was empty at the time, was leveled. A building next door housing a pizza shop and bakery was heavily damaged, and homes as far as neighboring Salem had broken windows.
« We were working and all of the sudden — boom — and everything gets dark, » said Luis Ferreira, owner of the Danversport Bakery. He and three others, including his father-in-law, were working overnight baking bread and pies for holiday customers.
Ferreira said the bakery immediately went dark, and through the flour and dust, he and the others called out to each other.
« We had no idea what happened at the time. We just got out of there, » said Ferreira, who suffered scrapes on his face and sported a bandage on his left temple.
Danvers Fire Chief James Tutko and State Fire Marshal Steve Coan said CAI had a commendable safety record. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board planned to assess the site Friday to determine if a full investigation was needed.
« All of us at CAI are shocked and devastated by this accident, » CAI treasurer Paul Sartorelli said in a news release. « Our foremost concern is for the safety and well-being of our neighbors and employees. »
Sartorelli said the company had an « impeccable » safety record and underwent major safety upgrades in 2001.
The company was inspected once, in 1990, as part of a planned visit by federal officials and no violations were found, according to Ted Fitzgerald, a spokesman for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The lack of inspections indicates a lack of complaints to OSHA, he said.
« A lot of people never knew it was there, that’s how benign they were, » said one neighbor, Jack Fratus.
The Danversport neighborhood along the river is among the oldest in the town, dating to the 1700s. Officials said it always has had a mixture of business and homes because it was developed before there were zoning laws.
Mike Nalipinski, on-scene coordinator for the Environmental Protection Agency, said preliminary tests showed low levels of toluene, a solvent, but nothing of significance

  4. Pour info Fabre détient également 20 % de la Depeche du Midi … journal en quasi monopole sur Toulouse
Donc , si jamais il y avait des infos « dérangeantes » concernant AZF ou SNPE … elles vont avoir du mal à « exploser » …

  6. I’m impressed, I have to admit. Genuinely rarely should i encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you might have hit the nail about the head. Your thought is outstanding; the problem is an element that inadequate individuals are speaking intelligently about. We are delighted we stumbled across this at my hunt for something relating to this.
