Les évènements empirent d’heure en heure au Japon autour de ce qu’on peut désormais lucidement appeler la catastrophe de Fukushima.
Si l’Autorité de sûreté nucléaire française (ASN) vient de classer « l’incident » survenu à la centrale nucléaire au niveau 6 sur l’échelle internationale des événements nucléaires (INES), la BBC indique de son côté que l’Institut américain pour la Science et la Sécurité Internationale (ISIS), basé à Washington, s’est dit en accord avec l’ASN.
L’ASN rappelle par ailleurs qu’un incendie s’était déclaré dans la nuit de lundi à mardi au niveau de cette piscine, sinistre circonscrit depuis, précisant dans un communiqué que « l’état du combustible stocké, potentiellement affecté par l’incendie, n’est pas déterminé ».
Le journal Le Monde précise pour sa part que l’agence de sûreté nucléaire japonaise vient d’ annoncer que le toit du réacteur n°4 de la centrale de Fukushima n°1 était fissuré. Rappelons que ce réacteur était à l’arrêt pour maintenance au moment du séisme et du tsunami.
Auparavant dans la journée, Tepco, la compagnie d’électricité japonaise qui exploite la centrale, avait indiqué lors d’une conférence de presse qu’elle envisageait de verser de l’eau par hélicoptère dans une piscine du réacteur pour refroidir du combustible nucléaire usé.
Si l’Autorité avait déjà fait état d’une « dégradation de l’enceinte de confinement » du réacteur 2, laquelle est consécutive à deux explosions, elle s’inquiète également à présent « d’une augmentation significative des rejets radioactifs détectés » en limite du site.
« La radioprotection des travailleurs sur le site devient préoccupante« , relève ainsi l’ASN, précisant que le gouvernement japonais « a relevé le seuil de dose maximale » autorisée pour les salariés des sites concernés.
L’Institut américain pour la Science et la Sécurité Internationale estime quant à lui que la situation s’est «considérablement aggravée» et est désormais plus proche d’un niveau 6. Pire, « il peut malheureusement arriver à un niveau 7» – le niveau maximum sur l’échelle INES – si l’on en croit l’Institut.

ISIS assesses that the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has worsened considerably. The explosion in the Unit 2 reactor, the third so far, and the fire in the spent fuel pond in the reactor building for Unit 41 means that this accident can no longer be viewed as a level 4 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Events (INES) scale that ranks events from 1 to 7. A level 4 incident involves only local radiological consequences. This event is now closer to a level 6, and it may unfortunately reach a level 7.
A level 6 event means that consequences are broader and countermeasures are needed to deal with the radioactive contamination. A level 7 event would constitute a larger release of radioactive material, and would require further extended countermeasures. The international community should increase assistance to Japan to both contain the emergency at the reactors and to address the wider contamination. We need to find a solution together.
