La hausse des stocks de brut US annoncée en milieu de journée n’aura pas porté le prix du baril à la baisse jeudi à New-York, les marchés demeurant quelque peu fébriles à la veille d’une réunion importante de l’Opep (Organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole).
Pourtant les stocks hebdomadaires de pétrole US ont affiché un plus haut inobservé depuis 31 ans, facteur nettement baissier. Mais c’était sans compter sur la volatilité engendrée par la tension du côté des investisseurs, lesquels s’avèrent quelques peu anxieux avant une réunion du cartel durant laquelle les quotas de production pourraient être abaissés.
Le Département de l’Energie américain (DoE) a annoncé durant la journée une hausse inattendue des stocks au cours de la semaine achevée le 24 mai des stocks, cette dernière s’élevant à 3 million de barils.
Au final, le baril de light sweet crude (WTI) pour livraison en juillet aura grimpé de 48 cents à 93,61 dollars, sur le New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), et ce, après avoir ouvert nettement en baisse.
Parallèlement à Londres, le baril de Brent de la mer du Nord pour même échéance finissait la journée à 102,19 dollars sur l’Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), chutant de 24 cents par rapport à la clôture de mercredi.
